Rusty buzzer tying tutorial

Buzzer: Rusty

This buzzer is a minimalist yet highly effective pattern for stillwater trout.

I usually tie it on a Hanak H 300 BL hook in size 12.

The pattern requires very few materials: a black Veevus 8/0 tying thread and Glitter Thread Textreme “Rusty”, whose other colours also make great variations.

This fly is simple to tie, but take your time: even wraps and tight turns will give you a smooth, neat and perfectly finished body.

- Secure the Hanak H 300 BL hook in the vise.

- Start directly with the Glitter Thread, tying it in just behind the eye.

- Wrap the thread in touching turns down to the bend, then come back up towards the eye with the same regular tension. Make a second down-and-up layer if you want to bulk up the body.

- Whip finish about 2 mm behind the eye and cut the thread.

- Switch to black 8/0 thread (or another diameter) to build a neat, compact head.

- Whip finish again and cut as close as possible.

- Carefully burn off any stray fibres with a lighter.

- Finish with one or two coats of thin UV resin for a shiny, durable body.
