Before letting you dive into these tips, I wanted to take a few lines to introduce Matthieu Mercier, a friend, fishing guide and instructor, and an excellent fly angler.

Matthieu is one of those passionate anglers who loves sharing knowledge in a simple, clear, and educational way. A euro nymphing specialist, he coaches many anglers to help them improve, better understand drifts, fine-tune their rigs, and become more effective.

He is also the author of the book Learn and Master Euro Nymphing, as well as the Learn and Master Euro Nymphing video course, two resources we are pleased to offer on La Fine Mouche.

If you want to make serious progress in euro nymphing, or simply enjoy a great day of learning by the water, do not hesitate to use his services as a fishing guide and instructor via his website: matthieumercier-pechemouche.fr.

I am therefore very happy to share this article written by Matthieu, with 5 essential tips to help you get started with euro nymphing.

5 TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED WITH EURO NYMPHING

It is clear that euro nymphing is now a highly popular technique. Many fly anglers turn to this method, among other reasons, to extend their fishing session while waiting for surface activity to pick up again.

In that sense, euro nymphing is a particularly good complement to dry fly fishing.

Many natural bait anglers are also turning to euro nymphing for its ease of use, its versatility on streams and medium-sized rivers, and the dynamic nature of the fishing!

Yet behind its apparent simplicity, this technique can prove tricky to master. Beginners often run into difficulties that can sometimes lead them to give up.

Each tip represents a paragraph of around ten lines. Reading them will take no more than 15 minutes, but applying these few tips will save you valuable time in your learning process. After that, it is up to you to take the technique further!

I wish you a very good read, and welcome to the exciting world of euro nymphing!

TIP NO. 1/5: LEARN TO CAST PROPERLY!

The importance of casting in euro nymphing is often underestimated. Yet the cast is what sets up the drift, and a well-managed drift is what will trigger the take. The cast is therefore the initial element that establishes the drift.

But let us stick to the basics. Above all, our casts need to be accurate. The more accurate we are, the fewer unnecessary casts we make, and each cast genuinely increases our chances of catching a fish.

The key rule is therefore the 180-degree rule.

How to apply it: when loading our nymphs on the back cast, we make sure they are aligned with the target zone along the same longitudinal axis.

In other words, the loading point and the target zone should form a straight line, a 180° angle. In euro nymphing, we also want to clearly feel the weight of the nymphs load the rod tip, which tells us we can start the forward cast.

In addition, we should favor straight-line casts rather than high arcing casts, especially so we can get under obstacles - overhanging branches, structures, and so on.

Other casting elements will also help the nymphs sink better, allowing them to start fishing more quickly. This is a casting movement I cover in detail in the dedicated course. To begin with, the priority is simply to fully understand and apply the 180-degree concept!
